The download-and-display exhibition The Island in the Middle of Everywhere invites you on a remarkable journey to Xwe’etay (pronounced hwe-e-tay), also known as Lasqueti Island, part of the Northern Gulf Islands in British Columbia.
Through stunning photographs and a video, this visual display highlights the Xwe’etay/Lasqueti Archaeological Project (XLAP), which unites Coast Salish peoples and settler residents to honor the ancient Indigenous presence on Lasqueti Island.
Learn about the traditional land and sea management practices of the Northern Coast Salish peoples, who created a sustainable and rich supply of food for generations. Discover how terraces, fish traps, and camas lily beds were used to harvest fish, clams, and plants. The XLAP team continues to uncover these ancient practices, highlighting the importance of preserving this heritage today.
This exhibition is co-curated by the XLAP and the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum. Ingenium is dedicated to fostering accessibility and inclusion, in hopes that audiences of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can engage with and appreciate the stories and history presented within our exhibitions.
