Make your own mini horseshoe game to play with your family and friends!
Materials
- Corrugated cardboard
- Scissors
- Coloured paper, felt, or markers
- Short cardboard tube (empty toilet paper or paper towel roll)
- Duct tape
- Glue or tape
- Aluminum foil
- Coins or metal washers
Method
- Cut out an 8 ½ x 11 inch (22 cm x 28 cm) piece of cardboard for your base. Cover it with coloured paper or felt, or simply colour the cardboard with your markers. Ask an adult to cut a small 1-inch (2.5 cm) hole in the middle of the base.
- Cut open the cardboard tube, then roll it tightly to fit in the hole in your base. Wrap the tube with duct tape, leaving 1 inch (2.5 cm) uncovered at the bottom. Cut three vertical slits around the bottom of the exposed section of the tube. Slide the unwrapped side of the tube through the hole, opening the cuts and securing the cardboard flaps to the underside of the base with glue or tape.
- Using another piece of cardboard, cut out an even number of horseshoe shapes. Wrap with aluminum foil and mark each team’s horseshoes with different coins (or any other flat metal object that will add some weight to the horseshoe).
- To play, the teams takes turns tossing their horseshoes with the aim of hooking them around the post. Once all the horseshoes have been tossed, tally up the points. You can award one point for every horseshoe that touches the post, and two points for every horseshoe that encircles the post. Or, make up your own point system…be creative!
Did You Know?
Horses wear shoes to protect their feet from hard, rough surfaces — just like us! Horses’ hooves are made of keratin, the same material that forms our fingernails and hair. Does it hurt when you clip your fingernails? No, and it doesn’t hurt a horse to have its shoes nailed on either.
