Technical history:
Coleco’s Telstar electronic game console was the first to use General Instrument’s AY-3-8500 chip, which allowed users to play multiple games and required few external parts to make it into a complete TV game.
History:
The Coleco Telstar was released to the market in 1976 and sold over 1 million copies that year. Magnavox, an American electronics company, required royalties be paid for any gaming machine. Thus Coleco was forced to pay Magnavox in order to continue producing the system.
