A building frame made of large, smooth wooden beams representing an Indigenous Big House is in the middle of an exhibition gallery with plain walls and cement floors. Inside the frame is a life-sized representation of an Indigenous canoe adorned with artwork of the Pacific Northwest Indigenous style. Several free-standing exhibition panels and digital display screens are out of focus in the foreground and background.

For thousands of years, the traditional ocean-going canoe was essential for the sustenance of coastal people and the development of their unique social and ceremonial life.

Created by the Heiltsuk Tribal Council, the travelling exhibition, Sacred Journey, unveils, for the first time, this amazing story through the Indigenous framework of Nuyum (traditional stories).

The exhibit offers reflection and ideas on how Indigenous teachings and lived canoe journey experiences can strengthen modern society, decolonize from the impacts of residential schools, inspire stewardship, and contribute to innovation and the creation of meaningful employment and economic development opportunities.
