For thousands of years, the traditional ocean-going canoe was essential for the sustenance of coastal people and the development of their unique social and ceremonial life.
Created by the Heiltsuk Tribal Council, the travelling exhibition, Sacred Journey, unveils, for the first time, this amazing story through the Indigenous framework of Nuyum (traditional stories).
The exhibit offers reflection and ideas on how Indigenous teachings and lived canoe journey experiences can strengthen modern society, decolonize from the impacts of residential schools, inspire stewardship, and contribute to innovation and the creation of meaningful employment and economic development opportunities.
Immerse yourself into the world of Indigenous canoe culture expressed through metaphoric art, immersive audio and extensive interactive video projections and displays and discover how the Tribal Canoe Journeys have catalyzed the revitalization of Indigenous culture, community healing, and youth empowerment on the Pacific Northwest Coast.
