Bohan Li is a PhD student in Popular Music and Media Studies at the University of Alberta. Previously he earned a BA in Music from Hunan Normal University (China) and an MMus at the University of Sydney (Australia). Bohan’s research interests span popular/independent music in the field of urban ethnomusicology; music and media studies; and issues of cultural production and the music industry in contemporary China. He identifies as a performer-researcher and intends on continuing to bridge these two practices in his future work. Bohan currently serves as a Research Fellow at Ingenium and a Teaching Assistant in the University of Alberta’s Music Department. Outside of academia, he also works as a saxophone teacher who strives to inspire younger generations via music as a way of giving back to the community.
