OTTAWA, November 13, 2019— Do you have what it takes to be a future STEAM leader? Applications are now open for the 2020 Ingenium – NSERC STEAM Horizon Awards, where Canada’s youth are invited to join a roster of outstanding previous winners!

Five Canadian students will be awarded $25,000 each to study in a science, technology, engineering, art and design, and math (STEAM) field at a Canadian university, college or CÉGEP. Two of these awards will be exclusively given to Indigenous students. The winners will be invited to Ottawa and recognized at an award ceremony in the spring of 2020.

The award invites Canada’s youth to promote positive changes throughout their community using STEAM. Applicants can approach their passion for technology and science from any angle, whether from an art and design perspective, research project, public outreach, or development of a new idea or product.

The application deadline for the 2020 Ingenium – NSERC STEAM Horizon Awards is January 15, 2020.

Media are invited to download 30-second television public service announcements to help spread the word.

Quick facts

The 2020 Ingenium – NSERC STEAM Horizon Awards are made possible by a consortium of partners and sponsors, including the Ingenium Foundation, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Indspire, Lockheed Martin Canada, and Syncrude Canada Ltd.

In order to be eligible to apply, applicants must be:

    • a Canadian citizen, or permanent resident of Canada by the application deadline;
    • between 16 and 18 years old by the application deadline;
    • recognized for STEAM-related accomplishments in a formal or informal capacity;

About Ingenium – Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation
Ingenium celebrates the innovative spirit of Canadians by telling the stories of those who dared to think differently. Inspired by the power of ingenuity, Ingenium encompasses three national institutions: the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, and the Canada Science and Technology Museum. These three museums are places where the past meets the future, with spaces where visitors can learn and explore, play and discover. Ingenium continues to evolve — the brand new Ingenium Centre houses Canada’s science and technology collection, a research institute, and a digital innovation lab, all designed to protect priceless Canadian heritage artifacts for the benefit of many generations to come. Beyond the physical walls of its museums, Ingenium’s engaging digital content, outreach programs and travelling exhibitions serve to educate, entertain, and engage audiences across Canada and around the world.

About the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
NSERC invests over $1.2 billion each year in natural sciences and engineering research in Canada. Our investments deliver discoveries—valuable world-firsts in knowledge claimed by a brain trust of over 11,000 professors. Our investments enable partnerships and collaborations that connect the makers and users of discoveries. Research partnerships established by NSERC help inform research and development and solve scale-up challenges.

NSERC also provides scholarships and hands-on training experience for more than 30,000 post-secondary students and post-doctoral fellows. These young researchers will be the next generation of science and engineering leaders in Canada.
