Ottawa, April 21, 2016 - The Canada Aviation and Space Museum will be transformed into a veritable training ground for aspiring cadets when Star Trek: The Starfleet Academy Experience launches on May 13. The exhibition, which is touring as part of Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary, uses the Star Trek franchise to teach visitors about science and technology.
The Starfleet Academy Experience provides cadet recruits with an opportunity to experience a “career day” at the Academy. In an immersive environment, recruits try out a number of activities to test their potential to train for careers as Medical Officers, Science Officers, Communications specialists, even Commanders.
The experience is enriched with the actual science behind the science fiction of Star Trek as the participants learn about emerging technologies such as a functional tricorder, NASA’s warp drive theory, and the latest experiments with phasers and teleporters.

Cadet recruits can expect to spend approximately 60 minutes trying the interactive tests and games, and engaging with the videos and displays showcasing Star Trek’s influence on technology. 200-250 visitors per hour can participate in The Starfleet Academy Experience, which occupies 10,000 sq. ft (930 m2).
The exhibition, under license by CBS Consumer Products, runs until September 5, 2016. Tickets are on sale online at joinstarfleetacademy.ca or can be purchased at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum box office beginning May 11, 2016.
Take a seat in the Captain’s Chair
As part of the lead up to the Starfleet Academy Experience, the general public is invited to take a seat in an exact replica of Captain Kirk’s Chair from the bridge of the Starship Enterprise (from Star Trek: The Original Series). This one-of-a kind, high-tech interactive display will be touring around Ottawa, Montreal and Kingston beginning April 23.
