The Canada Science and Technology Museum, one of three museums under Ingenium – Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation, is the proud recipient of the Ontario Museum Association (OMA) Award of Excellence in Special Projects.

Presented to individuals, institutions, corporations or agencies, the OMA Award of Excellence in Special Projects recognizes innovative initiatives, new approaches, and techniques that advance the museum profession. The museum was recognized for its successful renewal — a complex project that saw a complete redesign of its 80,000 sq. ft. exhibition space.

A meeting point between past, present, and future, the reinvented museum combined what visitors loved about the previous incarnation — locomotives and the Crazy Kitchen — with 11 brand-new, interactive exhibitions that explore Canada’s stories of science, technology, and innovation. The new museum is a space for guests to discover, play, and experience how people have made Canada and continue to shape its future, witness live demonstrations, engage with augmented reality and mobile apps, or tinker in the Exploratek maker studio.

In addition, the stage has been set for the museum to connect with visitors beyond its four walls, through immersive technologies and stunning visual displays, such as its immersive LED canopy at the museum’s entrance. The project also allowed the museum to put new accessibility standards into practice, making it the first national public institution in Canada to receive the Accessibility Certified Gold rating under the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification™ (RHFAC) program.

The Canada Science and Technology Museum was honoured with the award at the 2018 OMA Awards of Excellence Annual Conference, which took place in Toronto, Ontario on Oct. 25, 2018.

“We’re thrilled that the reimagined Canada Science and Technology Museum has been recognized by the Ontario Museum Association.
