Learn about the journey from cow to cone by joining us at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum’s annual Ice Cream Festival! You can practise your milking technique on the museum’s wooden cow, and learn how dairying technology now includes milking machines and robotic milkers. Help make ice cream with an old-fashioned manual ice cream maker, then taste the fruits of your labour. Step back in time to the 1950s and discover the history of ice cream scoops and sundaes, including a sample of this delicious treat. Other activities include crowd-pleasing performances by Capital Jumpers, a dance party with DJ Rico, and a photo booth! Also on the schedule are samplings of sorbet floats, and a kids’ corner with crafts and games. A variety of food services and local ice cream vendors will be on site. Don’t miss this tasty treat of a day!


Ice Cream Making

9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.
Help make ice cream the old-fashioned way using a manual ice cream maker. You will also be able to sample this delicious, velvety smooth ice cream.

Ice Cream Sundae Tasting

Step back in time to a 1950s-style Soda Fountain Shop and learn about the history of sundaes! Discover how this treat soon became one of the most popular desserts of choice for the young and young at heart. Plus, get the scoop on scoops…discover how the ice cream scoop has changed over time.

Cone Corner

Discover fun and unusual ways to use ice cream cones! Learn about their history and different varieties, and be sure to sample our unique take on Trail Mix — the perfect ice cream topping!

Sorbet Floats

Check out our twist on the classic ice cream float — a sorbet float!  Enjoy a sample while learning about the history of this sweet treat.

Meet the Dairy Goats

Did you know that more people consume goat’s milk than any other milk in the world? Meet our staff and the museum’s dairy goat breeds.

Cream Separation

11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Have you ever wondered how your local dairy produces two percent milk or 35 percent whipping cream? Learn about the separation of milk and cream while turning the crank of a centrifugal cream separator.

Barn Dance and Photo Booth

Ongoing party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Come dance with us! Groove to DJ Rico’s fabulous music mix, and don’t miss the free photo booth — your family photo will make a great memento!

Join us and meet our resident rabbits, Alfred and Céleste. Discover fun and interesting facts about this lagomorph family!

Dairy Farmers of Ontario – From Cow to Cone

Find out how much milk a cow produces each day, and how much of that milk is cream. How many ice cream cones does that make? The quantities are truly amazing! You can even practise your milking technique on the museum’s wooden cow.

Afternoon Milking

Have you ever seen a cow being milked? Join our museum staff’ as they teach you all about milking our dairy herd.

Capital Jumpers

Ongoing from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The Capital City Jumpers are a jump rope team coached by two nationally-ranked jumpers. Jump along with them and learn various styles of jump rope. All ages welcome.

Frozen Treats: While supplies last!

Frozen treats will be served to our visitors during this fun-filled day! Look for one of the museum’s mascots or staff members, who will be handing them out.

Parks Canada: Learn-to-Camp activities

Are you interested in going on your first camping trip but don’t know where to begin? The Learn-to Camp team has you covered! Visit the Parks Canada pop-up campsite and participate in activities that introduce you to camping.

Stilt Walker

Keep an eye out for a colourfully-dressed butterfly stilt walker roaming the museum site! 

Rookie Riders Kid Zone

Rookie Riders is a National Program, providing an opportunity for children to experience the joy of equestrian sport, starting on a barrel.  This skill building program introduces activities and games which will help kids develop balance, coordination and flexibility. 

Ottawa Volunteer Search and Rescue

Sauvetage Bénévole Outaouais – Ottawa Volunteer Search and Rescue (SBO-OVSAR) is a not-for-profit, volunteer organization that assists individuals and communities through search and rescue operations, education and prevention programs, and through providing support to emergency response organizations. Meet some of their members while learning about Search and Rescue and SBO-OVSAR’s Prevention Programs.
