In April 2016, the City of Gatineau launched an urban agriculture program. Its objective is to facilitate the practise of urban agriculture for everyone, including aviculture — the practise of keeping and breeding birds — in urban areas. In 2017, the city authorized citizens to have laying hens as part of a pilot project. Since this first phase was successful, the City of Gatineau started a second phase in 2018 — with the support of Mr. Marc Dallaire, a poultry expert. Dallaire worked for many years at the Institut de technologie agroalimentaire in St-Hyacinthe, QC and specializes in poultry production. He will join us to discuss the framework required for good aviculture practices in urban areas, and the successes of the City of Gatineau. He will talk about rearing laying hens, including egg production, general management principles for laying hens, important aspects of building a hen house, choice of laying hens, and more.
This presentation will be given in French, followed by a bilingual question-and-answer period.
