Presentation in English with a bilingual Q+A.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math? Curiosity on Stage is a series of short, interactive presentations that brings you face-to-face with researchers and innovators. Each week, a featured speaker delivers an engaging presentation followed by an interactive Q-and-A session. Curiosity on Stage invites you to learn directly from people working in the science and technology-related fields. Find out what they do and why it matters – and leave inspired by their stories of curiosity, overcoming obstacles, and innovation.

While everyone is welcome on the Demo Stage, this program is recommended for ages 10+.

This week: Impacts and X-rays - A look inside helmet testing

Oren Petel, Associate Professor at Carleton University

Oren petel

Dr. Petel received his PhD in 2011 from McGill University, where his research focused on the detonation and shock wave physics, and the design of ballistic and blast protection. Since joining Carleton University in 2013, as a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, his research focus has expanded to include injury biomechanics. Recently, his research group has designed and built a unique high-speed X-ray system to investigate concussion and other types of impact trauma.

This week, we'll take a look at current helmet testing techniques and the innovations that are currently taking place in the Impact Dynamics Research Lab at Carleton University. This interactive discussion will include some hands-on demonstrations, explanations of the technology, as well as some fun high-speed X-ray videos.
