Aug 24, 2017
In his many years teaching at the University of Toronto Department of Otolaryngology, Dr. Vito Forte with his colleague Dr. Paolo Campisi, watched medical students struggle to learn how to accurately diagnose ear conditions. It became clear that students needed more practice time to develop the ability to correctly perform an otoscopy, or ear exam, and avoid over-prescribing antibiotics and unnecessary referrals to specialists, which contribute to the overall burden on the healthcare system

Aug 23, 2017
Frank Bouchard recognized the need for a low-tech solution to a common problem – giving learners and creators erasability. His Wipebook invention is a reusable, recyclable dry erase paper notebook that allows users to create, solve, erase and start again. Developed initially as an entrepreneurial class project at the University of Ottawa, consumer demand for Wipebook was overwhelming. When Mr. Bouchard started a crowdfunding campaign to raise $4,000 in pre-orders, the campaign raised an

Aug 23, 2017
For patients diagnosed with malignant brain tumours, surgery is often the recommended treatment option, but some tumors are too difficult or risky for surgeons to reach, rendering them inoperable. The introduction of NeuroBlate gives neurosurgeons a new option for treating brain tumours. The NeuroBlate System uses a novel side-firing laser-probe that can be inserted into a small incision in the skull to heat and kill tumour cells. The minimally invasive procedure is conducted in an MRI machine

Aug 22, 2017
Good science is about asking good questions. So when genetic anomalies researcher Irene Uchida learned those born with Down syndrome had an extra chromosome, she decided to find out why. Uchida’s studies soon associated the presence of the extra chromosome in children with the mothers’ exposure to radiation, which altered their genetic material – a finding that led to fewer abdominal X-rays on women. Uchida continued her research on birth defects as director of genetics and cytogenetics

Here’s a story that takes the cake! Legend has it that Theodore Witte of Chilliwack, British Columbia, got his inspiration for the world’s first caulking gun by watching a local baker decorate a cake by squeezing icing out of a piping bag. In 1894 Witte patented his “puttying-tool”, a “simple and inexpensive” ratcheted device that let users apply a sealant without having to touch the stuff with either their hands or a putty knife.

What does a good set of teeth have to do with growing wheat? Back in 1903, strong>Charles Saunders headed up grain research at Ottawa’s Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. He sometimes used his teeth for a mill and his mouth for an oven, chewing wheat grains into dough to determine their flour and bread quality. Saunders cross-bred wheat varieties from Eastern Europe and India to create a hybrid that would thrive in Canadian conditions. His crowning achievement, Marquis wheat, dominated the

Snowblower

Aug 22, 2017
How did a dairy farmer dream up a snowblower? He reaped his idea from his neighbour’s combine harvester! Tired of struggling to make milk deliveries during snowy Quebec winters, Arthur Sicard designed a machine to collect and blow away snow instead of grain. Thirty years and several advances in automotive technology later, he developed a modified truck that could scoop and throw snow farther than 25 metres. In 1927 Sicard sold his first snowblowers to cities on the Island of Montreal, selling
