An artifact that symbolizes Canada’s long history of oil extraction will soon have a new home. Weighing in at nearly 16,000 kg, an oil pump jack is among the largest artifacts slated to move into the Collections Conservation Centre, a state-of-the-art facility that’s currently under construction next to the Canada Science and Technology Museum. “It was one of the first pieces in the collection,” says Anna Adamek, director of Ingenium’s curatorial division. She explains that the oil pump jack

Last summer, the Canada Science and Technology Museum offered up access to its collection so that researcher Jennifer Thivierge could study “keypunch girls” — the women who punched holes in data cards and fed them into machines or tabulators, starting in the 1950s. The University of Ottawa’s Gazette writes about her findings, and what they say about gender discrimination within the field of computer science.
