Jul 27, 2018
Synopsis: For over six years, aviation history buff and Ottawa Chapter member Jay Hunt has been fascinated with and disturbed by the story of RCAF Squadron Leader Fowler Gobeil, who was the first commanding officer of the RAF 242 ‘Canadian’ Squadron, which was later to gain fame as Douglas Bader’s international squadron. He wanted to know why Gobeil’s wartime tour was viewed as a black mark against his otherwise sterling career, when it should have been recognized as a stellar achievement. Jay

Really, do you know what a Duncan & Bayley XP-2 Skyhook is, off the top of your head, my reading friend? By the way, please accept my apologies for repeating the name of this pilotless aircraft / drone / remotely piloted vehicle / unmanned aerial vehicle. Yours truly just finds it very cool, but I digress. If truth be told, I must say I had never heard of the Skyhook before the photo above came across my path. Would you like to know more about it? No? Well, too bad, so sad. Our story began in

In my first post, I wrote about the first step in my challenge to build a weather station for the Canada Aviation and Space Museum - which was to get the Raspberry Pi and the Arduino communicating. The next step in the project was to connect the weather sensors, and have them output real measurements.

Gauging by the artifacts—which include Bob Barker’s toothbrush, Elvis’s underwear, and more than 400 sock monkeys—the Museum of Odd is aptly named. Located in Lawrence, Kansas, the museum is the personal home of Randy Walker – who believes that “everyone should collect something.” Read the full article to find out more about this eclectic museum and its owner.

Good day / buongiorno / bonjour, my reading friend. You may wonder what a scooter lifted off the pages of the 10 August 1958 issue of a Montréal, Québec, weekly, Le Petit Journal, is doing in our blog / bulletin / thingee. I respectfully respond to this observation by pointing out that there is more to life than airplanes. This being said (typed?), the subject that concerns us this week has a small aeronautical element, but enough twaddle, let us move into the heart of the matter. Allied to

In my recent adventures as an intern with the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, I spent time programming the Raspberry Pi in order to set a very simple, internal website that can be accessed to see the data. The next task was to start thinking about the casing for the weather station we’re building for the museum. My advisor and I decided to design and 3D print our own boxes.
