Willkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome! Mein lesender Freund. Ami(e) lectrice ou lecteur. My reading friend. In eine Geschichte aus zwei Reinhardts. À un conte de deux Reinhardt. To a tale of two Reinhardts. One could argue our tale began in 1812 with the birth of Gottlieb Friedrich Reinhardt, quite possibly in Strümpfelbach, Württemberg, one of the kingdoms which made up the Rheinische Bundesstaaten, a short-lived (1806-13) confederation of German speaking client states established at the behest of

VIEW INFOGRAPHIC It’s no secret that Ingenium is gearing up for a big move. As staff busy themselves with this mammoth task, let us take a moment to fully appreciate just one of the MANY collections being packed up for the journey to the new Collections Conservation Center. Did you know that the Canada Science and Technology Museum holds the largest collection related to the history of bicycle technology in Canada? The Shields Collection contains over 3,000 items from the early nineteenth

With fall and the end of a growing season upon us, in the northern hemisphere of our embattled planet at least, it occurred to yours truly that an agricultural topic might be a good idea, especially if it could be linked to the one true and great topic, aviation. I shall be brief, and… Who’s laughing? Who?! Just for that, there will be a test. The first half of the 1950s saw the birth of an important player in the aerial application industry in Canada, the flying farmer movement. This powerful

On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human to venture into space. At just after 9 am local time at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Gagarin launched into low earth orbit, completed a full orbit in 108 minutes, and returned safely. This achievement not only firmly set the Soviet Union has the leader in space technology at the time, but marked the beginning of the human exploration of space. Internationally, April 12 is now "Yuri's Night," an evening of celebration meant to

Hej, my reading friend, and... You seem puzzled. Oh, hej means hello in Danish. So, grab yourself one, Danish that is, the pastry of course. We have a story to share. If yours truly was to utter the word Himmelskibet, what thought or image would pop into your mind? Not much, from the feel of it, but that’s quite all right. Let us begin our journey through space and time. The month and year were February 1918. Sorrow, pain, despair and anger reigned across Europe, North America and beyond. For

Good day to you, my assiduous reading friend. Are you ready to drink from the fount of knowledge otherwise known as our blog / bulletin / thingee? Good for you. Let us continue our investigation of the bird impact research work done in Ottawa, Ontario, by the National Research Council of Canada (NRC). To do that, we will have to put on our seven decade boots, our nine decade boots actually, and travel back in time to the year 1930. The Engine Laboratory of the Division of Mechanical Engineering

The Felixstowe F-5L which became the winged sandwich stand in the photo above apparently left Miami, Florida, in late January 1931. Its crew landed on Sarasota Bay on the following day and cast anchor near the municipal pier. The F-5L had left Cape May, New Jersey, a few weeks before, with another flying boat operated by Atlantic Coast Airways Corporation of Delaware. Its crew had flown to the Magic City, as Miami was / is called, in order to attend the third All American Air Races held in

A big interplanetary hello, my reading friend. Yours truly wishes to begin this text with an irrevocable promise: I shall be brief. A big thank you for your applause. I think. I must confess to being a little short of time these days and that’s why I looked at the photograph above, published in the 20 to 27 September 1959 issue of the weekly Le Petit Journal of Montréal, Québec. I dare to hope that this space topic, closely related to the fields of activity of the Canada Aviation and Space

Welcome, my reading friend. Let us jump into the heart of the matter without further ado. As interesting as they were, the Moto-Plane and Raz-Mut ultralights were only one aspect of Jean Saint-Germain’s aeronautical activities. Fascinated by the performance of the Bensen B-8M Gyrocopter single seat autogiro, an American aircraft tested for the first time in December 1955, the Québec inventor and pilot bought a production license and launched a promotional campaign. You seem puzzled, my reading
