Jan 22, 2018
A 3D scanner, a pair of hackers, and a whole lot of creativity is bringing a unique artifact from the Canada Science and Technology Museum to life in Canadian classrooms. It all started last year, when a zoetrope – a pre-film animation device that produces the illusion of motion – was selected as one of several artifacts to be scanned for educational purposes.

When a museum lends one of its precious artifacts to another institution, it’s a little bit like sending your kid off to summer camp. That’s the clever analogy conservator Erin Secord uses to explain the condition reports she’s required to send back to the Museo Galileo in Florence, Italy – about an early telescope that’s on display at the Canada Science and Technology Museum for the next few months. “It’s a little like sending your kid to summer camp; you send them with a bunch of instructions

Feb 15, 2018
Canadians need to learn how to embrace their failures – and use them as opportunities to grow and learn – rather than sweeping them under the rug. That’s the key message in Canadian Failures: Stories of Building Toward Success, a new book by Alex Benay, Chief Information Officer of the Government of Canada. “Personally speaking, I just don’t think we talk about failure enough to get better,” says Benay in a candid interview about his book and the unique approach behind it. “The process was to

The new Canada Science and Technology Museum has more than 2,900 artifacts on display throughout its various galleries. Before the museum reopened its doors in November 2017, a small team worked tirelessly – for nearly a year – to design and create the mounts and interfaces for all objects on display. The Channel sat down with three members of the team to talk about how they work their behind-the-scenes mountmaking magic. Names: Kenn Bingley, Giuseppe Crupi, and Derek Brousseau What does your

Google Arts & Culture recently made headlines with its selfie-to-painting recognition app, as people eagerly tried out a new facial recognition feature to see if they resemble the Mona Lisa or van Gogh. What many people don’t know is that Google Arts & Culture has been around since 2011 – and is partnered with museums and galleries across the globe. Ingenium has been a partner in this world-wide initiative since 2015. So, why would a science and technology-focused organization be featured in an

Imagine standing up in front of a room full of people and openly discussing feelings of vulnerability, fear, anger and pain. In my view, that’s an incredible act of bravery - and I was honoured to hear some of those brave personal accounts from the participants at the Women in Planetary Science and Exploration Conference (WPSE2018), which took place Feb 17-18, 2018 in Toronto, Canada. When it comes to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), women, people of colour, the

What better place to sharpen one’s leadership skills than amidst the harsh landscape of Antarctica. The frozen continent is filled with stories of leadership from the early 20th century explorers and their race to be the first to set foot on the South Pole. For 76 of us from around the world - all women with science backgrounds - Antarctica was the backdrop for our own explorations into leadership.
