Last week, a Goss printing press moved into Ingenium’s new Collections Conservation Centre in Ottawa. At 32 metric tons — the approximate equivalent of five African elephants — the press is one of the heaviest pieces in Canada’s national science and technology collection.

The annals of history are filled with the accomplishments of remarkable people: discoverers of scientific phenomena and innovators of new technologies. But for the most part, history only celebrates the achievements of men. Granted, our high school textbooks teach us about Joan of Arc and Marie Antoinette, but what about women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)? Their absence is proof of centuries of marginalization and gender discrimination. It shouldn’t be surprising then to

A visit to amazing London

For my husband’s fortieth birthday this year, I decided to surprise him with a trip to London, England over March Break. We both love to travel and try to see as many sights as possible when we do. Most of the places we go tend to be historical — I guess one would expect that much from a curator! There is no shortage of amazing places to see in London and our list of “must-sees” was quite long; we only had six days to fit them all in. I’m happy to report that we got to all the must-sees and with

I still remember the feeling of pride. I don’t know if it’s because senior kindergarteners are that much more sophisticated than the lesser juniors, but even as a five-year-old, I knew there was something special about being a part of the first generation of students to attend Roberta Bondar Public School in Ottawa. The halls were freshly waxed and the jungle gym had yet to be climbed. It was my school — more so, it seemed, than the person who it was named after.

The Collections Conservation Centre — currently under construction next to the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa — will be a lot of things: a state-of-the-art home for Canada’s national science and technology collection, a place for research and digital initiatives (both on site and online), and a workplace for Ingenium staff. Over the last few months, employees have been extremely busy. They’ve been going through the collection (currently spread across three different warehouses)

Each object we move to the new Collections Conservation Centre comes with many stories, connections, and interpretations. As a curator for physical sciences and medicine, I have the privilege of examining incredibly diverse objects in the national science and technology collection. This microdensitometer stands out for a number of reasons; first, it has an illustrious connection to Canadian and international astronomy. The microdensitometer featured here came to Ingenium from the David Dunlap

As Ingenium prepares to move the national science and technology collection into the new Collections Conservation Centre over the coming months, curator Sharon Babaian reflects on the purpose of collecting. As curators, we collect objects to document, preserve, and understand the past. The things made and used by people are physical evidence of human invention, activity, and need; they also reflect the societies, communities, and cultures that created and adopted them. Currently under construction in Ottawa, the Collections Conservation Centre is the future home for hundreds of thousands of nationally-significant science and technology artifacts. These objects represent Ingenium’s three museums — the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, and the Canada Science and Technology Museum — but they’re also emblematic of Canadian ingenuity and Canadians’ everyday experience. To reflect on this incredible milestone and what it means

As a student in the Game Development program at Algonquin College, I never thought I’d be working on my final, cumulative project at a museum! Perhaps I should give you a little bit of the back story. Thanks to a partnership between Algonquin College and the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, a space simulation game in Virtual Reality (VR) is benefiting from the interactive feedback of museum visitors.
