In an urban environment, street names provide essential information: where am I? Where am I going? Where am I coming from? They orient us to our location, not only physically but also culturally, historically, and linguistically. As a result, street names can simultaneously reflect and create a community’s identity.

But for the most part, history only celebrates the achievements of men. Granted, our high school textbooks teach us about Joan of Arc and Marie Antoinette, but what about women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)? Their absence is proof of centuries of marginalization and gender discrimination. It shouldn’t be surprising then to

I still remember the feeling of pride. I don’t know if it’s because senior kindergarteners are that much more sophisticated than the lesser juniors, but even as a five-year-old, I knew there was something special about being a part of the first generation of students to attend Roberta Bondar Public School in Ottawa. The halls were freshly waxed and the jungle gym had yet to be climbed. It was my school — more so, it seemed, than the person who it was named after.

The Collections Conservation Centre — currently under construction next to the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa — will be a lot of things: a state-of-the-art home for Canada’s national science and technology collection, a place for research and digital initiatives (both on site and online), and a workplace for Ingenium staff. Over the last few months, employees have been extremely busy. They’ve been going through the collection (currently spread across three different warehouses)

In honour of World Soil Day, this blog post reports on a collaborative research project that explores the history of soil science in Canada. Launched in June 2018, the project documents the history of Canadian soil scientists and their research programs, as well as their documentary and artefactual heritage. This project was generously funded by the Canadian Soil Information Service at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
