I still remember the feeling of pride. I don’t know if it’s because senior kindergarteners are that much more sophisticated than the lesser juniors, but even as a five-year-old, I knew there was something special about being a part of the first generation of students to attend Roberta Bondar Public School in Ottawa. The halls were freshly waxed and the jungle gym had yet to be climbed. It was my school — more so, it seemed, than the person who it was named after.

The Collections Conservation Centre — currently under construction next to the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa — will be a lot of things: a state-of-the-art home for Canada’s national science and technology collection, a place for research and digital initiatives (both on site and online), and a workplace for Ingenium staff. Over the last few months, employees have been extremely busy. They’ve been going through the collection (currently spread across three different warehouses)

Why we collect

As Ingenium prepares to move the national science and technology collection into the new Collections Conservation Centre over the coming months, curator Sharon Babaian reflects on the purpose of collecting. As curators, we collect objects to document, preserve, and understand the past. The things made and used by people are physical evidence of human invention, activity, and need; they also reflect the societies, communities, and cultures that created and adopted them. Currently under construction in Ottawa, the Collections Conservation Centre is the future home for hundreds of thousands of nationally-significant science and technology artifacts. These objects represent Ingenium’s three museums — the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, and the Canada Science and Technology Museum — but they’re also emblematic of Canadian ingenuity and Canadians’ everyday experience. To reflect on this incredible milestone and what it means

Bringing museums to life through performative storytelling

Today’s museums are facing a monumental challenge: in an increasingly loud world, how can we ensure that our important stories resonate with the next generation? When I walk down the sidewalk, it scares me to see people — particularly youth — constantly distracted by their phones. I reserve judgement, however, since youth are truly not at fault. The next generation has never known a world that isn’t constantly clamouring for their attention, offering up endless entertainment in the form of

Being a historian of technology, by profession and by heart, I always look for examples of human ingenuity during my travels. These creative solutions — which employ available tools and materials — offer a unique glimpse into the lives of communities, the choices they make, and the challenges they face. Here are a few examples.

I have been deeply fascinated by astronomy and space exploration for over 33 years (since I was nine years old). I can remember at a young age staring at the sky at night, and then sifting through astronomy books with a thirst to learn as much as I could. Over the years, my interest continued with a fondness for transient astronomical phenomena such as meteor showers, planets, eclipses, and aurora borealis. I will often drive long distances to be in a good position to view these events.

Kat Kavanagh is the co-founder and executive director of Water Rangers, a citizen science project that brings education and water quality testing to the public. The Ingenium Channel sat down with her — over the phone, as she was away doing water testing at her cottage — to learn about Water Rangers and what it means to be a citizen scientist.

Seeking equality: Women in Planetary Science and Exploration Conference

Imagine standing up in front of a room full of people and openly discussing feelings of vulnerability, fear, anger and pain. In my view, that’s an incredible act of bravery - and I was honoured to hear some of those brave personal accounts from the participants at the Women in Planetary Science and Exploration Conference (WPSE2018), which took place Feb 17-18, 2018 in Toronto, Canada. When it comes to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), women, people of colour, the
