This nebula, named Lynds' Dark Nebula (LDN) 1622 (the 1622 dark nebula catalogued by Beverly T. Lynds), is a dim and dusty cloud of gas. It is approximately 500 light years away (meaning, it takes light about 500 years to travel the distance), and about 10 light-years across (which would be about 10x bigger than our solar system). Lynds' list originally contained 1802 objects she found by visual inspection of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS I) catalog. POSS I was a survey that imaged

Atmosphere Found Around Earth-like Planet GJ 1132b

Apr 21, 2017
Astronomers from Keele University, the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, and others, have discovered the first atmosphere around an Earth-sized planet. The planet, GJ1132b is about 1.4x Earth's diameter and 39 light years away from us. Currently there are over 3000 known planets orbiting stars other than the Sun, but only a handful of which have been confirmed to have atmospheres, and all of which are massive Jupiter-sized planets. In the ongoing quest to find a planet similar to Earth, this

Writing in braille was made easy by the Converto-Braille

Sight is something that many of us take for granted. It’s unlikely that you’ll come across things written in braille all that often. Although braille is still relatively uncommon, there was a time when it’d be near impossible for people that were visually impaired to find reading material. That was until the invention of the Converto-Braille, a braille printer designed by Roland Galarneau, a self-taught machinist from Hull, Quebec. Galarneau was visually impaired so he knew firsthand how little

Richard Yim grew up in a part of Cambodia where children had to be careful playing outside. While that may seem like a general note you learn growing up in Canada, Yim’s experience carries a lot more weight since Cambodia is littered with about 10 million landmines. Yim even had the horrific experience of witnessing his aunt die from stepping on a mine when he was just eight-years-old. When he moved to Canada with his family he was amazed to see kids playing outside like there was nothing to

Patch up and protect against the sun

Profile picture for user Curious Canada

Apr 4, 2017
Parents are always in a frenzy to make sure their kids are caked in sunscreen in order to protect them during the blaze of a Canadian summer. This way they’re always one step ahead of ultra-violet rays trying to get through. Nanotechnology students at the University of Waterloo had the same concern, so they found a way to literally see when it’s time reapply sunblock. They started a company called Suncayr, and their flagship product is the Spot. It looks like a regular patch, to the uninformed
