Canada’s economy underwent dramatic changes during the Second World War, as Britain looked overseas for new sources of food, lumber, minerals, and other resources. While the 1930s were dominated by the Great Depression, the outbreak of war spurred the greatest growth the country has ever known. Between 1939 and 1945, Canada’s gross national product (GNP) more than doubled.

Remembering life as an Air Force “brat”

Nov 7, 2018
I grew up as the son of a serving member of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Although we were officially designated “dependents,” my brother and I have ever since been Air Force “brats” — a term that is shared only with great affection among all of us who shared that life. Dad wasn’t a pilot, but along with his team in Sabre Maintenance, he sure kept them flying. And I’ve never yet heard of a pilot who forgets to acknowledge his or her ground crew’s efforts. Growing up as brats, we certainly

Last summer, a precious artifact — believed to be an early test model used in the Avro Arrow jet fighter program — was recovered from the bottom of Lake Ontario. Covered in zebra mussels from its years spent under the water, the artifact’s preservation requires enormous amounts of painstaking work from highly-trained conservators. Read about the recovery effort and the ongoing efforts to restore this artifact — which holds a special place in Canadian aviation history.

In honour of Archives Awareness Week (April 2-8), Ingenium is highlighting a few gems taken from our digital collection. In archives and museums, history is often told through the prism of provenance. This could mean that the history of the artifact is told from the point of view of the manufacturer that made the object, or by the company that used the object. Similarly in archives, we most often present records from the point of view of their creator or the last person to use them before they

In honour of Archives Awareness Week (April 2-8), Ingenium is highlighting a few gems taken from our digital collection. This text has been adapted from the Picturing the Past website, developed by the Canada Science and Technology Museum in 2006. As early as 1933, with Hitler’s rise to power, the British government began to plan for war with Germany. Many Britons were concerned, not only with the bombing of cities, but with the threat of military invasion and occupation by the German army. The

Greetings, gentle reader and welcome to the wonderful world of aviation and space. Yours truly is celebrating, or not, a birthday this month. Given this event of galactic proportion, I decided to abandon my usual anniversarial approach, if there is such an expression, for this month only of course, in order to pick a topic that tickled my funny bone. The photo above caught my attention a few years ago. I actually found it in two separate magazines, namely the June 1935 issue of the British

In honour of Archives Awareness Week (April 2-8), Ingenium is highlighting a few gems taken from our digital collection. The captions displayed here are the original text. During the Second World War, iron was a vital commodity for ship building, as well as rails, guns, and munitions manufacturing. Raw ore was shipped from Little Bell Island, Newfoundland, among other mines, to Sydney, Nova Scotia, where it was made into steel. In September 1942, two ships waiting to be filled with ore were sunk

Yours truly was so fascinated by the story of the Air Cushion Landing System that I decided to dig further still. Thus, let it be known throughout the land that, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Bell Aerosystems Company, a subsidiary of Bell Aerospace Corporation later known as the Bell Aerospace Company Division of Textron Incorporated, was the most experienced manufacturer of air cushion vehicles / hovercrafts in North America. The American company, for example, held the license for the
