Ingenium’s Digital Archives portal is now officially a year old! It’s hard to believe a year has flown by since we first offered unprecedented access to the archives of our three national museums. To celebrate this anniversary — and this year’s Archives Awareness Week in Ontario (April 1-7, 2019) —we’ve added three new collections to the portal. I invite you to take a look at the first images from the Hawker Siddeley fonds, the Ken Molson fonds, and the Trade Literature Collection. In the next

Ingenium’s new Collections Conservation Centre will open in only a few months. This is a dream come true for those of us who have been caring for Canada’s national collection of scientific and technological artifacts for our entire careers, and have been waiting for this moment for over a decade.

How do you move a library and archives? Very carefully. As Ingenium’s archivist, a big part of my role lately has been to prepare for a major move to the Collections Conservation Centre — scheduled for completion later this year. If you live in Ottawa, you may have noticed the construction site right next to the Canada Science and Technology Museum. Ingenium staff will soon begin moving with two museum collections into the new building. Among the collections to move are the library and archival

Do you know what memories—made in Canada—are now enshrined in the world’s memory? The UNESCO Memory of the World program registers documentary heritage considered to be of world significance and outstanding universal value. A number of collections preserved in Canada are on the register, including some that show the history of science and innovation. The University of Toronto’s insulin collections, for example, consist of the archives created by the scientific team of Frederick Grant Banting

This summer I had an amazing time visiting the Canada’s Museum of Science and Technology (CSTM). With my family and friends, we took in the sites and explored the exhibits, sounds and interactives of the new museum. There is so much to see that it requires several visits to take everything in as intended. My way into work every day this summer regularly offered me intriguing views of the new development around the museum and the constant stream of visitors arriving; it was a busy summer 2018

In the late 1800s, Canadian cities were in the process of a major transition due to great population increases, industrialization and a growing middle class. Toronto was no exception, and in terms of its population size and industrial production, was second only to Montreal in these years.

This text has been adapted from the Picturing the Past website, developed by the Canada Science and Technology Museum in 2006. In addition to building the rail system across the country, Canada’s two national railway companies (Canadian National Railways and the Canadian Pacific Railway) built a string of grand hotels in the major cities and resort areas of the nation.

In honour of Archives Awareness Week (April 2-8), Ingenium is highlighting a few gems taken from our digital collection. In archives and museums, history is often told through the prism of provenance. This could mean that the history of the artifact is told from the point of view of the manufacturer that made the object, or by the company that used the object. Similarly in archives, we most often present records from the point of view of their creator or the last person to use them before they

Google Arts & Culture recently made headlines with its selfie-to-painting recognition app, as people eagerly tried out a new facial recognition feature to see if they resemble the Mona Lisa or van Gogh. What many people don’t know is that Google Arts & Culture has been around since 2011 – and is partnered with museums and galleries across the globe. Ingenium has been a partner in this world-wide initiative since 2015. So, why would a science and technology-focused organization be featured in an
