It's possible you may have heard in the news, or from your friends, that antibiotics are becoming less powerful over time as the bacteria they are designed to attack evolve the ability to resist attacks. A team of researchers from the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, have been working on re-designing a 60-year-old antibiotic called Vancomycin so that the dangerous 'super-bog' enterococci can no longer resist it, and progress looks favourable. Aug 24, 2017
An estimated 220,000 Canadians a year pick up infections at healthcare facilities, with hospital-acquired infections (HAI) identified as the cause of up to 12,000 deaths and $1 billion in health-care costs annually. Typically, hospitals and clinics have approached this challenge by investing in more staff and supplies to keep surfaces clean. Fabrizio Chiacchia and Iwain Lam’s pioneering approach involves developing products to prevent hospital beds, stretchers and other surfaces from becoming

Aug 24, 2017
In his many years teaching at the University of Toronto Department of Otolaryngology, Dr. Vito Forte with his colleague Dr. Paolo Campisi, watched medical students struggle to learn how to accurately diagnose ear conditions. It became clear that students needed more practice time to develop the ability to correctly perform an otoscopy, or ear exam, and avoid over-prescribing antibiotics and unnecessary referrals to specialists, which contribute to the overall burden on the healthcare system

Aug 23, 2017
Dr. Michel G. Bergeron’s contribution to medical innovation has not only saved countless lives, but is helping battle one of the biggest threats facing modern medicine – antibiotic resistance. His Rapid <1hr Molecular Diagnostics for Better Care identifies microorganisms causing infections using their DNA instead of the slow Pasteur microbial culture which takes ≥48hr, allowing physicians to prescribe antibiotics with precision in real time. Dr. Bergeron was the 2016 Manning Innovation Principal

For patients diagnosed with malignant brain tumours, surgery is often the recommended treatment option, but some tumors are too difficult or risky for surgeons to reach, rendering them inoperable. The introduction of NeuroBlate gives neurosurgeons a new option for treating brain tumours. The NeuroBlate System uses a novel side-firing laser-probe that can be inserted into a small incision in the skull to heat and kill tumour cells. The minimally invasive procedure is conducted in an MRI machine

Irene Ayako Uchida: Cause of Down Syndrome

Profile picture for user Ontario Science Centre

Aug 22, 2017
Good science is about asking good questions. So when genetic anomalies researcher Irene Uchida learned those born with Down syndrome had an extra chromosome, she decided to find out why. Uchida’s studies soon associated the presence of the extra chromosome in children with the mothers’ exposure to radiation, which altered their genetic material – a finding that led to fewer abdominal X-rays on women. Uchida continued her research on birth defects as director of genetics and cytogenetics

Every week about 423 Canadians are diagnosed colorectal cancer (CRC) and a 175 die from it. In Canada it’s the second most commonly diagnosed and globally it’s the third most common. CRC is highly treatable and 90% preventable if caught early—but nearly 50% of cases aren’t.* Early detection is critical, yet current screening options are either not the most accurate and not patient friendly or invasive and expensive: Stool test – 5-15% accurate in detecting colonic polyps (CRC precursor) and

Surgical Site infections are the 4th leading cause of death in Canada, representing a serious threat to patient safety. Patients who develop infections post surgery are five times more likely to be readmitted to hospital and twice as likely to die. Surgical site infections also represent a significant cost burden to our provincial healthcare systems. The CDC reports that the average surgical site infection costs over $20,000, suggesting that the surgical site infection burden represents a cost
