During her long career at Western University, zoologist Helen Battle pioneered the use of fertilized fish eggs to study the effects of pollutants on aquatic life and drinking water, and of carcinogenic substances on cell growth. In 1928, Battle was the first woman in Canada awarded a PhD in Marine Biology, and she was subsequently named one of 19 outstanding women scientists by the national Museum of Natural Science in 1975.

The leaves of the Madagascar periwinkle plant, Vinca Rosea, contain a powerful anti-cancer drug. In 1958, chemist Charles Beer and Dr. Robert Noble discovered and isolated it. Known as the father of modern wind engineering, Alan Davenport’s research into wind’s impact on built and natural environments improved the stability of structures around the world. In 1965, he established at Western University the first-of-its-kind Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory for civil engineers.
