In 1921 James Collip, a University of Alberta researcher and professor came to work at JR Macleod’s lab in Toronto during a sabbatical leave. Banting and Best, who also worked in Macleod’s lab, had discovered an extract (they called isletin) that effectively treated diabetic animals but were struggling to purify it for human use. Macleod asked Collip, a biochemist, to help. Collip devised a way to purify the extract and in one month had produced enough for human trials. After testing it on

In 2013, Lorina Naci led a study at Western University’s world-renowned Brain & Mind Institute, which, for the first time, used a simple test of attention and neuroimaging to read human thought via brain activity when conveying specific “yes” or “no” answers. Naci and her colleagues Rhodri Cusack, Vivian Z. Jia and Adrian Owen are now utilizing this method to communicate with behaviorally non-responsive patients, who may be misdiagnosed as being in a vegetative state.

Using complete genome sequences of twins and parents, Western University’s Shiva Singh and colleagues established in 2011 that identical twins do not necessarily share identical DNA sequences. These results question the conclusions of more than 100 years of genetic research that had assumed the genomes of monozygotic twins to be 100 per cent identical.

Researchers at The Insurance Research Lab for Better Homes applied the first realistic hurricane wind load simulation to a full-scale house in 2008, providing valuable information for how to make structures safer. The Western University facility is the first-of its-kind in the world to allow researchers to simulate and study realistic damage to full-scale houses from wind, snow and rain – all within a controlled environment. Capable of simulating pressures as strong as a Category 5 hurricane, it
