The insight readers wait for. Anyone who grew up with Ann Landers and Dear Abby may be forgiven for thinking that advice to the lovelorn is an American innovation, but they’d be wrong. The honour must be given (among many others) to Toronto’s Kit Coleman, who in 1889 began penning her regular column “Woman’s Kingdom” in the Toronto Mail. While the bylined feature was styled “for women only,” it was avidly read by men too, notably Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier, who, by his own admission, would

The hookless fastener. Many great innovations simply speed up or eliminate the actions that consume our time. The hookless fastener, more commonly known as the zipper, is one of the classics. The man on the other side of the zipper is Swedish-born Gideon Sundback. In 1913, he came up with something he called the Hookless No. 2. It’s the metal zipper as we know it today—two strips of teeth brought together tightly by a slider. No more tricky buckles or time-consuming hook-and-eye fasteners

The precursor to peace on earth. McGill University professor of law John Humphrey believed “there will be peace on earth when the rights of all are respected.” He backed up this profound and noble sentiment with the best attempt made so far to identify the inalienable rights of all. Professor Humphrey’s achievement is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights—a preamble and thirty brief clauses that encapsulate the rights to which each and every human being is entitled. He wrote the declaration

THEMUSEUM OF IDEA TRANSCENDING OBJECTS – or just THEMUSEUM as most people call it- was born out of the ashes of the underachieving Waterloo Regional Children’s Museum. David Marskell, a former marketing director at the Canadian National Exhibition and now THEMUSEUM’s CEO, was asked to step in and steer the ship through rough waters. Marskell recognized that it was imperative to pivot from catering exclusively towards children and families to offering relevant programming for all background and

As head of the Centre for Infant Cognition at the University of British Columbia, Kiley Hamlin is interested in the development of the human mind and how we understand and evaluate the social world. One of her research projects looks for the earliest signs of morality by measuring how early in life infants can differentiate between good and bad behaviour in others. This video is part of a collection of stories called Educating

Florence Lawrence was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1886 and died in Hollywood in 1938 after starring in more than 200 films. Her gravestone is marked with the title The First Movie Star in recognition of her important role in Hollywood history. In an era when on-screen credits were rare, she was the first film actress to be known by name and the first product of the “star system.” Florence became wealthy enough to own one of the first automobiles in California. Morse Music – The World’s First Electronic Wave Organ

User profile image
Janis Nostbakken
Jan 19, 2017
In November 1927, Morse Robb was heralded in newspaper stories as a genius for his invention of the world’s first electronic wave organ. At the age of 24, Robb had found a way to reproduce the magnificent tones of a cathedral pipe organ in an instrument that was small enough to fit in a family home. Instead of pipes, his innovation featured 12 shafts, one for each note of the chromatic scale. Sets of “tone discs” corresponding to organ stops were mounted on each shaft. The discs rotated to
