Collecting and Connecting

Jun 30, 2017
Curators do many things at our three museums – research, develop exhibits, respond to research requests, provide content for museum programs, and host the public, scholars and students in our collections. Collecting, however, is our most important activity. Through collecting we create a material legacy for Canadians; through the act of collecting we connect with Canadians and help connect Canadians with each other. Collecting is not just collection building, it is community building.

The New York Times wrote a great piece describing a new research initiative called The Human Project. Its goal is to collect data on 10,000 people for 20 years covering everything from diet, exercise, social habits, computer use, and more. The expectation is we will learn more about the human condition than ever before based on the sheer volume of data available.

Seaweed: From superfood to superconductor

Apr 21, 2017
Seaweed, an edible algae with a long history in Atlantic Canada (e.g. dulse seaweed) and some Asian cuisines, could turn out to be an essential ingredient in another trend: the development of more sustainable ways to power our devices. Researchers are using a seaweed-derived material to replace traditional non-renewable carbon materials to help boost the performance of superconductors, lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells in a sustainable way.

For most people, the loss of a leg to cancer would be devastating. But Terry Fox said it made his life challenging and rewarding. Of course, Fox wasn’t your average athlete. His situation didn’t hold him back from chasing his dreams. Instead, it helped him campaign for the awareness of cancer, its research and the perception of people with motor impairments. To this day Fox instills hope in our nation. Terry fox was 18 years-old just starting his degree in kinesiology, when he was diagnosed with

The Comhandi: a Voice for the Voiceless

Profile picture for user Curious Canada
Curious Canada
Apr 6, 2017
There was a time in Canadian History when people mute by paralysis were neglected, and their capacity for communication barely considered by the rest of society. In the 1960’s this mindset was swept aside with the invention of the Comhandi, an electronic letter-board designed as a tool for children with motor impairments. The Comhandi would allow kids suffering from disorders like nonverbal cerebral palsy to have their voices heard through their inputs on the keys. This way they could

Sight is something that many of us take for granted. It’s unlikely that you’ll come across things written in braille all that often. Although braille is still relatively uncommon, there was a time when it’d be near impossible for people that were visually impaired to find reading material. That was until the invention of the Converto-Braille, a braille printer designed by Roland Galarneau, a self-taught machinist from Hull, Quebec. Galarneau was visually impaired so he knew firsthand how little

Parents are always in a frenzy to make sure their kids are caked in sunscreen in order to protect them during the blaze of a Canadian summer. This way they’re always one step ahead of ultra-violet rays trying to get through. Nanotechnology students at the University of Waterloo had the same concern, so they found a way to literally see when it’s time reapply sunblock. They started a company called Suncayr, and their flagship product is the Spot. It looks like a regular patch, to the uninformed
