Petroleum pipeline leaks are costly – for business and for the environment. Researchers are now developing bacteria-based sensors to detect hydrocarbons released by a leak – and emit a wireless alert signal to technicians.

A new product will soon enable novice beekeepers to keep honeybees inside their houses. The BEEcosystem is modular honeybee habitat that can be hung almost anywhere; it simply needs to be placed near a window if inside, or in a sheltered location outside. Watch a video that shows how the technology works.

The veins of Mother Earth: Underwater cave exploration with Jill Heinerth

Jun 12, 2018
As a child, Jill Heinerth dreamed of being an astronaut. As a Canadian girl growing up in the twentieth century, this option didn’t seem accessible to her. Instead of a career that blasted her far above the Earth’s surface, she forged her own path deep within the Earth. She discovered a place where she could still explore hidden worlds, floating weightlessly. Although water is the lifeblood of our planet, we somehow know more about the cosmos than we do about our Earth’s own underwater caves

Through the course of a project spanning nine years, two Ingenium conservators — Tony Missio and David Elliott — had the chance to work on the complete restoration and preservation of the 6” Cooke & Sons refracting telescope, bought by the Meteorological Service of Canada in 1882. The telescope was in service for over 100 years; it was donated to the museum by its last owner, the University of Toronto, in 1984. The telescope was dismantled and brought to the national collection storage. On

The Petrovic Collection at the Canada Science and Technology Museum is a collection of over 130 mathematical instruments from the twelfth to nineteenth centuries. These instruments came to the museum in 1980 from Dr. George Petrovic, a Serbian-born architect who collected them in order to document the connections between mathematical practice and architecture in the eastern Mediterranean regions, as well as countries that were once part of the Ottoman Empire. The collection is now at the centre

"Science is humanity's best effort at uncovering the truth about our world, about our very existence." Kirsty Duncan, Canada's Minister of Science, makes the case that researchers must be free to present uncomfortable truths and challenge the thinking of the day -- and that we all have a duty to speak up when we see science being stifled or suppressed. #ScienceAroundMe

A cow named Magic at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum has distinguished herself from the rest of the herd – by testing positive for a special form of beta casein protein that may make her milk easier to digest. Magic — one of two Guernsey cows in a herd of 60 — was tested earlier this year by the Canadian Guernsey Association. “It’s a gene test – you just pull hair and you can test the DNA,” explains Jennifer Russell, a herdsperson for the museum, which is a working farm in Ottawa. In honour of National Volunteer Week – April 15 to 21 – Ingenium is putting the spotlight on just a few of its invaluable volunteers. In today’s profile, the Channel highlights Patrick Legault – a volunteer with the Canada Science and Technology Museum. When Patrick Legault began volunteering with the artifact handlers at the Canada Science and Technology Museum in 2014, he was immediately struck by the strong sense of team spirit amongst the staff.
