As a greeting, my reading friend, I make you the solemn promise to be brief, at least for this week. Let us begin our peroration, dare I say (type?) pontification, with a visit to the second edition of the Salon (international?) de l’Auto, held at Place Bonaventure, in Montréal, Québec, from 15 to 25 January 1970. One of the many, many visitors at this event was none other than Charles Aznavour, born Shahnourh Varinag Aznavourian. This world famous French author composer interpreter, actor and

Space, the final frontier. A catchy opening for this issue of our blog / bulletin / thingee, don’t you think? This expression known to so many, or so few, is also very appropriate given that the individual at the heart of said issue was truly one the great space artists of the 20th century. Before we get there, yours truly would like to quote the caption of the photograph I found in the 24 January 1960 issue of the Montréal, Québec, weekly, La Patrie du dimanche. And there it is, in translation

Good morning, and ... What is it I hear? You want to know the names of the characters played by the actresses and actors visible in the photograph above? Am I not entitled to a small hello? Sigh. Know then, my slightly overenthusiastic reading friend, that said actresses and actors played the following characters in the Québec science fiction television series Opération-Mystère: - Luce Guilbeault, Cellamare, an extraterrestrial, - Marcel Cabay, Professor Narthon and Arsène, 2 naughty and kind

Kon’nichiwa and hello, my diligent reading friend, yours truly hopes that life is treating you well. As the year of space which 2019 was slowly comes to a close, it occurred to me that a final look at a space movie, a Japanese space movie, Uchû Daisensô to be more precise, might be of interest. Mind you, I also thought / hoped that this topic would not turn into one of my typical how-to-be-brief-in-222-volumes textravanganzas. To my great chagrin, I soon discovered that translations of Japanese

Hello, dzień dobry and ublaahatsiatkut. I hope that the stars are favorable to you, my reading friend, and I use this expression knowing full well that astrology is a pseudoscience without any real foundation. Would you like to know all the data with which I started writing this issue of our blog / bulletin / thingee? Wunderbar. Allow me to quote the legend of the photograph above, in translation, extracted from the 23 November 1969 issue of the weekly, earlier on daily, La Patrie of Montréal

As was said (typed?) by a somewhat reckless individual, namely moi, while it is true that working for an institution such as the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, in Ottawa, Ontario, can sometimes be difficult, it is also true that the resources and treasures it preserves are unmatched in this country. Yours truly has dug in these resources on many occasions over the past 3 decades. I will not do so today, my reading friend. You see, today’s topic has little to do with aviation. I know. I too

Canada’s Name the Exoplanet Contest!

Scientists have discovered thousands of planets orbiting stars other than the Sun, aka exoplanets. Most of those planets have boring names consisting of letters and numbers that keep track of the star catalogue in which they are listed. Take, for example, planet HD 136418b. The "HD" refers to the Henry Draper Catalogue, the "136418" means the planet orbits the 136,418th star in the catalogue, and the "b" refers to it being the first planet discovered around that star (they don't use "a" because
