Hello there, my reading friend. A word of warning if I may, today’s topic is slightly sensitive in nature. Let me explain. I have a feeling that, just like me, you are not always thrilled at the idea of paying a visit to a dentist. If so, just image yourself as a lumberman, miner or trapper living in some isolated area. A toothache there could be the stuff of nightmares, and this is where our story begins. To be more precise, it actually began in the Russian Empire with a young man born in

A century after the 1918 influenza that killed tens of millions as it swept the globe, scientists are rethinking how to guard against another super-flu epidemic. It's possible you may have heard in the news, or from your friends, that antibiotics are becoming less powerful over time as the bacteria they are designed to attack evolve the ability to resist attacks. A team of researchers from the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, have been working on re-designing a 60-year-old antibiotic called Vancomycin so that the dangerous 'super-bog' enterococci can no longer resist it, and progress looks favourable.
