Last summer, a precious artifact — believed to be an early test model used in the Avro Arrow jet fighter program — was recovered from the bottom of Lake Ontario. Covered in zebra mussels from its years spent under the water, the artifact’s preservation requires enormous amounts of painstaking work from highly-trained conservators. Read about the recovery effort and the ongoing efforts to restore this artifact — which holds a special place in Canadian aviation history.

In honour of National Volunteer Week – April 15 to 21 – Ingenium is putting the spotlight on just a few of its invaluable volunteers. In today’s profile, the Channel highlights Terrie Pereira – who talks about her volunteer work with the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in her own words. By Terrie Pereira I started volunteering with the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in the summer of 2013. Around the same time, I was taking up flying lessons again at the Rockliffe Flying Club, after taking a

In honour of National Volunteer Week – April 15 to 21 – Ingenium is putting the spotlight on just a few of its invaluable volunteers. In today’s profile, the Channel highlights Bill Upton – a volunteer with the Canada Aviation and Space Museum. As a young boy in the 1960s, Bill Upton loved aviation so much that he spent his spare time writing letters to Canadian aviation manufacturers. “I would write letters multiple times a month, asking for photographs or lithographs of their products,”

In honour of Archives Awareness Week (April 2-8), Ingenium is highlighting a few gems taken from our digital collection. In archives and museums, history is often told through the prism of provenance. This could mean that the history of the artifact is told from the point of view of the manufacturer that made the object, or by the company that used the object. Similarly in archives, we most often present records from the point of view of their creator or the last person to use them before they

Google Arts & Culture recently made headlines with its selfie-to-painting recognition app, as people eagerly tried out a new facial recognition feature to see if they resemble the Mona Lisa or van Gogh. What many people don’t know is that Google Arts & Culture has been around since 2011 – and is partnered with museums and galleries across the globe. Ingenium has been a partner in this world-wide initiative since 2015. So, why would a science and technology-focused organization be featured in an

A lifelong passion for aviation connected Austin Douglas with the Canada Aviation and Space Museum – where he’s been a dedicated volunteer for over a quarter of a century. Douglas – who recently celebrated his ninetieth birthday – retired from a colourful career at Transport Canada in 1990. At the tail end of his career, he worked on the master plan for the Rockcliffe Airport, located right behind the museum. The following year, he began his volunteer work. “It became a habit,” says Douglas of
