Adventures with G-AKDN - Chapter 17

Diving for the race finish line Karen and I are being passed by a gaggle of aircraft only meters away that appear to be going twice as fast as us. But this is Royal Aero Club handicap air racing and the fastest airplane may not be the winner. KDN last air raced in the early fifties and won the Kings Cup over some much faster aircraft. If only I could fly as well as deHavilland test pilot Pat Fillingham, and if only Karen could navigate as well as Pat’s wife Sonja. We’re just thrilled to be a

I arrived at Bagby aerodrome to find KDN sitting in a hangar ready to fly. Graham and crew had done a great job reassembling her and with new Plexiglas windows installed in the refurbished canopy she looked fantastic. After a few local test flights I departed and flew the 150 miles south to our summer base at Finmere Aerodrome. It was an emotional flight. Flying over the UK countryside in KDN was like travelling back in time. The sky, the view, the airplane, hadn’t changed much since KDN flew

It is the best of times. It is the worst of times. I am flying KDN home across the beautiful Canada north, with a very heavy heart. James is not with me. He has died after a courageous battle with cancer. KDN had been proudly on display in the Bombardier delivery Hangar for two years. Customers for the Bombardier aircraft love seeing it tucked under the wing of the latest aircraft off the production line. We continued to keep the annual inspections current with Graham’s help, as well as fly

GlobalMedic is partnering with the industry leading, Waterloo-based Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) manufacturer Aeryon Labs to apply innovative Canadian technology to humanitarian response operations. UAV technology is evolving to play a large role in humanitarian response, allowing aid agencies to survey wide areas of damage from the air – offering a safer, less obtrusive and less expensive response method than the use of helicopters. The units record and transmit video in real time, even from

Adventures with G-AKDN - Chapter 14

The sky was falling at the Reno Air Race. One second Karen and I were watching the modified P-51 Mustang roar past at over 300 mph and in the next split second it pitched up, zoomed to 1000’, rolled onto it’s back, stalled and dove straight for us! Time stood still. I grabbed Karen’s arm and ran. Looking over my shoulder the Mustang accelerated. Slowly the nose started to lift and it changed direction. It slammed into the grandstand-seating full of people. We were in shock, but unhurt. That wasn

Lights camera action! Besides being a centerfold in EAA Vintage Aircraft magazine, KDN has also been featured in a TV commercial advertising high speed Internet for the provincial telecommunications company SaskTel. With a 35mm camera in the front seat, I flew formation and aerobatics from the back seat. KDN is unique in that it can be soloed from either seat. Another indication of the lightweight and different handling quality compared to the production models. We continued to fly and display

"Move up one foot and in three feet." said the photographer over the radio. Here James and I were flying formation with the EAA Photo aircraft over the Wisconsin countryside. What an honour to be asked to do this. One of my favourite aviation writers Bud Davisson had asked to write an article about KDN and our adventures with her. This article appeared in the EAA vintage aircraft magazine and KDN was also featured on the back cover. We had returned to Downsview to collect KDN and fly her to the

The airplane felt out of control. It was very pitchy and felt like we had a center of gravity issue I mentioned this to James who was sitting in back. After a short silence he said, “Do you think it has anything to do with the four liters of oil I put in the rear battery compartment?” What! Well ya. I told him to unbuckle and lean as far forward as possible as we flew 150 miles as level as possible and made a straight in landing in Regina. After reloading the airplane we departed in a much

We're on our own. We've been playing for time. And it's running out! This quote from the movie, The Battle of Britain, came to me as we furiously finished up the fabric job and collected all the parts for painting. We had to get the airplane back together, tested, and ready to fly 3,000 km from Saskatoon to Toronto to attend the 60th Anniversary of the Chipmunk on May 22, 2006. The time was a blur, but soon the airplane was sitting outside in the spring sunshine. Time to test fly and we arranged

We met a living legend. George Neal was the original test pilot of KDN, while he was de Havilland Canada’s Chief Pilot. George was retired and living near the original Downsview factory where KDN was built. He was keeping himself busy building a full size replica of a Hawker Hart Biplane in a small second house on his property. He was also still flying his own personal Chipmunk as well as his Hornet Moth. We contacted George to discuss specific features and details about Chipmunks and KDN
