A cow named Magic at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum has distinguished herself from the rest of the herd – by testing positive for a special form of beta casein protein that may make her milk easier to digest. Magic — one of two Guernsey cows in a herd of 60 — was tested earlier this year by the Canadian Guernsey Association. “It’s a gene test – you just pull hair and you can test the DNA,” explains Jennifer Russell, a herdsperson for the museum, which is a working farm in Ottawa. Google Arts & Culture recently made headlines with its selfie-to-painting recognition app, as people eagerly tried out a new facial recognition feature to see if they resemble the Mona Lisa or van Gogh. What many people don’t know is that Google Arts & Culture has been around since 2011 – and is partnered with museums and galleries across the globe. Ingenium has been a partner in this world-wide initiative since 2015. So, why would a science and technology-focused organization be featured in an

By William McRae When asked where metals such as nickel comes from, most people would tell you that it is found in the ground. Evidently it is a metal you mine. But what if I told you nickel can actually be grown? What if instead of mining the nickel ore, you were able to farm and harvest it every year? I was a little skeptical too, until I had a chance to sit down and chat with Dr. Bruce Conard, the man behind an unconventional initiative to clean up the surface soils of an Ontario community

Are you interested in learning about how the world works? You don’t need a lab or degree to explore – citizen science projects all over the world bring discovery to your home, backyard, or community. Citizen science is the product of researchers teaming up with the public to solve scientific issues. Projects exist in almost every field, including ecology, astronomy, molecular biology, and genomics. “Crowd-sourcing” research allows for data to be collected from all over the world, and benefits

The Canada Agriculture and Food Museum is looking to make the holiday season just a little bit sweeter for the homeless in Ottawa. On Saturday, Dec. 30, the museum will host its second-annual Cookie Day. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the public is invited to stop in and help bake up some homemade cookies. "Last year, we baked 400 cookies for donation," says Jamie Reardon, visitor experience assistant at the museum. "We need the public's help to try to break that record this year." All cookies will be

Researchers at MIT and the Max Planck Institute have developed a method for quick, on-site E. coli detection in food. While current food safety testing either requires days to complete or expensive equipment, this new method, paired with a smartphone and QR code, will make testing inexpensive and portable. The new detection process uses Janus emulsions, droplets consisting of two hemispheres of different densities. In water, the less dense, hydrocarbon hemisphere sits above the denser hemisphere
