Yesterday, in part 1 of “A conversation with a honeybee,” we began imagining what a honeybee might say if it had the chance to chat with a human.* The story continues below. I went inside to get an essential oil diffuser, to gently repel the mosquitos. As I was about to return to my tree to rest and start reading again, I heard some buzzing next to my flower bush. There was the bee, and she was counting, “Nine-hundred ninety nine flowers, one thousand flowers, one thousand and one flowers…” “I

In honour of World Honeybee Day on August 18, let’s imagine what a honeybee might say if it had the chance to chat with a human*. On a hot summer day, after working long hours in my garden — taking care of my flowers and vegetables — I decided to rest in the shade of my apple tree and read a few pages. No sooner had I sat down when a little bee fell onto my book. I heard her crying for help, “Please, somebody help me. Help!” I answered, “I’m here, are you OK?” She was breathing heavily and

A new product will soon enable novice beekeepers to keep honeybees inside their houses. The BEEcosystem is modular honeybee habitat that can be hung almost anywhere; it simply needs to be placed near a window if inside, or in a sheltered location outside. Watch a video that shows how the technology works.

A cow named Magic at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum has distinguished herself from the rest of the herd – by testing positive for a special form of beta casein protein that may make her milk easier to digest. Magic — one of two Guernsey cows in a herd of 60 — was tested earlier this year by the Canadian Guernsey Association. “It’s a gene test – you just pull hair and you can test the DNA,” explains Jennifer Russell, a herdsperson for the museum, which is a working farm in Ottawa. Did you know that Canada processes a whopping 2.86 million tonnes of potatoes a year — into things like frozen French fries, instant mashed potatoes and chips? Unfortunately, all of that processing translates into a lot of potato waste. But recently — at the University of Alberta — a team of innovative researchers found a way to put these potato processing leftovers to good use...by transforming then into a biodegradable plastic! Watch this short, educational video — developed by the Canada

Google Arts & Culture recently made headlines with its selfie-to-painting recognition app, as people eagerly tried out a new facial recognition feature to see if they resemble the Mona Lisa or van Gogh. What many people don’t know is that Google Arts & Culture has been around since 2011 – and is partnered with museums and galleries across the globe. Ingenium has been a partner in this world-wide initiative since 2015. So, why would a science and technology-focused organization be featured in an

By William McRae When asked where metals such as nickel comes from, most people would tell you that it is found in the ground. Evidently it is a metal you mine. But what if I told you nickel can actually be grown? What if instead of mining the nickel ore, you were able to farm and harvest it every year? I was a little skeptical too, until I had a chance to sit down and chat with Dr. Bruce Conard, the man behind an unconventional initiative to clean up the surface soils of an Ontario community
