Grain elevators have long been a symbol of agricultural strength for the Canadian prairies. But what was it actually like to work in the grain elevators? As a practicum student from Carleton University, I have been pondering this question while researching a grain elevator model in the agricultural collection of Ingenium – Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation. Fortunately, I was introduced to Friends of Grain Elevators (FOGE), a non-profit group of volunteers that celebrate grain elevators

When visiting museums, I have often taken part in hands-on activities to get a better sense of the historical significance of an exhibition. However, it was not until my three-week summer placement at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum that I truly understood the complex logistics behind such activities. It takes a whole lot of planning, testing, and paperwork to get a public program going smoothly! I got a taste of these steps this past summer; I had the chance to help create an engaging

Pitch darkness, near freezing temperatures, horrifyingly scary see-through monsters, and the weight of a couple hundred elephants crushing you to death. The bottom of the ocean is not exactly an easy place for humans to explore. But that doesn’t mean that we can just ignore the depths! The ocean is one of the final frontiers of exploration on Earth, and robots are the key to exploring and preserving it.

Ingenium’s Digital Archives portal is now officially a year old! It’s hard to believe a year has flown by since we first offered unprecedented access to the archives of our three national museums. To celebrate this anniversary — and this year’s Archives Awareness Week in Ontario (April 1-7, 2019) —we’ve added three new collections to the portal. I invite you to take a look at the first images from the Hawker Siddeley fonds, the Ken Molson fonds, and the Trade Literature Collection. In the next

World Space Week is celebrated each year from October 4 to 10. This year’s theme is “Space Unites the World” which truly reflects one of humanity’s greatest achievements — international cooperation in space. Orbiting our planet at any given time is a team of highly-trained astronauts from several different countries, living and working together on the International Space Station. Astronauts build a bond of kinship through their shared experiences that include learning about each other’s

What many people don’t know is that Google Arts & Culture has been around since 2011 – and is partnered with museums and galleries across the globe. Ingenium has been a partner in this world-wide initiative since 2015. So, why would a science and technology-focused organization be featured in an
