This historical assessment traces the evolution of the Canadian automobile manufacturing industry from it origins in the early 20th century to the 1980s. It is a history of making cars in Canada, primarily the business of making cars, with some attention paid to the technology and politics involved as well. Automobile manufacturing in Canada began as and has largely remained an offshoot of the much larger American industry. Government policies helped to protect and promote the industry by encouraging car makers to locate their factories in Canada. As a result, though only a handful of cars have been designed or developed in Canada, we have a flourishing manufacturing industry and have become a major exporter of automobiles.
